Sudamala Suites & Villas Sanur Review

It’s always hard to pick a good stay in Bali especially when you don’t know what is the type of hotel you want to stay in. Bali has grown so much with new hotels and resorts built every year. There are many types of accomodations in Bali from budget to luxurious, from traditional design to modern design and sometime are the mix of them. But Balinese ambience accommodations are the sought-after one.

Traveler will always look for everything related to its destination identity. Whether it is their local music, local food, their culture, and so on. That’s why many hotels and resorts in Bali insert some local wisdom in several aspects of their design and service.

At the end of November I had a chance to experience the hospitality of Sudamala Suites & Villas resorts in sanur. In the search of finding the best stay in Bali, of course i didn’t reject the offer. Then I packed my backpack and one luggage to Bali with the expectation that this trip won’t dissapoint me.

It took about 30-45 minutes for the driver to take me and two more people from garuda inflight magazine and high end magazine- to the resort located on sanur area. The hot and sunny weather of Bali left me speechless. Although it’s not the first time, I still cannot get used to the way it stinks my skin. But everything about Bali can always step up my adrenaline rush thinking about things I will experience there.

Homey! It was the ambience I got the first time arrived at the lobby. The resort doesn’t look big on the front. I saw a well-designed restaurant in the corner next to the lobby and an auditorium with a big and tall door covered with a poster entitled “ ETERNAL LINE EXHIBITION at Sudakara Artspace”, “very interesting “, I thought, “maybe I’ll take a look once I have put everything to my room”.

“Here is the welcome drink Mr. Irfan”, I couldn’t resist not to take a gulp of a small glass with a yellow liquid and I bet it was an orange juice. It was very refreshing after a 30 minutes ride from the airport to the resort. They had us one by one signed a paper then gave us the key to our room. Sudamala Resorts Sanur has 34 villas with 5 categories.

They are:

2 Villa Suites

4 Studio Pool Access Suites

4 Studio Suites

13 Deluxe Garden Suites

11 Deluxe Suites

Luckily I stayed 3 nights (2 nights in Deluxe Garden Suite and 1 night in Deluxe Suite) and perhaps my experience will help you decide to stay here. The first two days I stayed in Deluxe Garden Suite, it’s a big room with my own garden and fence. And in day 5 I stayed in the Deluxe suite, the room is a lil bit smaller than the previous one but I still have my own balcony facing the natah saji outdoor performance space.

Day 1 Sudamala Sanur

I was surprised when I got my own wifi router in the room with my full name as the username and the password for the access, kinda new for me and it felt very personal.  The room is very spacious and I have my own garden and all I can see is green everywhere. And I believe once you stay there you will never want to go out.  I also have an outdoor bathroom in my Deluxe Garden Suite, imagine, how cool is that!?

Beside the bed, there was a couch facing a tv screen so I can watch movies, and also Sudamala provide me a basket of fruits. I don’t need to worry if I get hungry in the midle of the night. Well, enough with the room, I then go to the restaurant resort because they would held the opening ceremony of the Eternal Line art exhibition which I most anticipated that day. I actually don’t understand much about paintings but I just love to see it to explore what the painting is all about. The Eternal Line exhibition presenting two different genre of paintings made by Mangku Muriati and Teja Astawa, you can visit the event from 03 December 2015 – 03 February 2016.

Mangku Muriati’s paintings bound to the pakem of Kamasan style. It creates a strong distinction of style and explorations to those of her peers of Kamasan artist. Her works embodiment of the extravagant and extraordinary sanging (painters; subject of the royal court during the years of Bali dynasties ) aesthetic of Gelgel dinasty and Klungkung era. “Eternal Line” exhibition presents series of her works that are themed based on the narrations of Hindu teachings that are widely spread in indonesia – especialy on Java and Bali islands – by the Hindu-Budshist kingdom pf majapahit.

A different genre of paintings present by Teja Astawa. A discrete sense of iconographies, yet familiar but still vague if compared to Kamasan wayang painting, that somewhat seems randomly composed with absurd and humor play, I think that is what best describe Teja Astawa’s paintings.  You can also buy the paintings if you interested on one of them. The ‘cheapest’ starts from IDR 7.500.000,- and the most expensive priced at IDR 71.000.000,-  .

Day 2 Sudamala Sanur

I almost didn’t want to wake up on my second day there. My bed was very comfortable with 4 big pillows surrounding me. Maybe it was because the bed or the night time story they gave me on my bed. Yep, last night after dinner, when im about to sleep I found a scroll on my blanket and it was a night time story about indonesian urban legend story. This was my very first experienced to stay in a resort and felt like home, I then read the story and fell asleep. The breakfast is ala carte, my recommendation is muesli and ayam betutu omelet. Two eggs boiled is also a nice one.  Don’t forget to order their cappucinno and flat white, they are awesome!

Sudajiva Spa

I’m so happy when they told me that i got a spa complimentary. There were 4 choices and i chose the candle nut spa treatment. The Sudajiva spa located aside the poolbar (Joglo Cafe and Lounge), near the Sudajiva front desk you will see a yoga space called Suda Ening. One thing that i liked about this area is the smell of herbs and spices that keeping me comfortable, in addition i given a drink consisted of tea and honey, super relaxing!

It was quite a long treatment. I even fell asleep when the therapist did her job to massage me. So firm and gentle- and the power was there. She’s mastered it, i feel satisfied about everything in sudajiva.
